Invasive Alien Plant (IAP) Control & Management Expert

Applied ecologist with more than 26 years of experience, consulting to governments, ministries, and NGOs worldwide on alien invasive plant control and management - from field survey to strategy, protected-area implementation, and international teaching.

Preparation of control programs based on best management practices, using the most suitable control methods and herbicides for each invasive taxon while ensuring effectiveness and habitat safety. Each control and management program includes a timetable for application and follow-up.

GIS-based mapping of IAP foci in natural areas.

All maps are control-oriented - that is, they include data for each focus, such as its size, accessibility and most suitable control technique.

Prioritization of control actions where resources are limited. The location, size and relative isolation index of the IAP foci are among the parameters included in the prioritization methodology.

Development of EDRR programs for immediate implementation, to prevent new and extensive infestations.

Delivery of field-based training sessions for small teams from organizations seeking IAP control expertise.

Design and execution of standardized experimental trials to develop new control protocols for specific taxa. All protocols are designed to minimize the risk of non-target effects, so they can be safely applied in natural areas.

Assessment of potentially invasive taxa according to the main international WRA standards.

Surveys of plant and animal species at various resolutions and across different seasons, depending on project guidelines. The surveys include Mapping of vegetation units and ecosystems, with particular focus on biodiversity, ecological sensitivity, functionality, conservation status and degree of disturbance.

Design of concrete measures to reduce negative impacts on native flora and fauna in road, infrastructure and development projects  - for example, dedicated, species-specific wildlife crossings (fauna passages) such as overpasses and underpasses; transplantation of geophytes and rare species; steps to reduce light pollution; and firebreak guidelines

    Prosopis juliflora (mathenge)

    New hack-and-squirt control protocol.
    92 trees treated in one application, 87% defoliated and 72% losing vitality within 4.5 months  - no felling, no resprouting. Phase two now in preparation along the Voi River.

    Tzipori Stream (Lower Galilee, Israel)

    IAP control program along 32 km of the Tzipori Stream corridor.
    Based on precise mapping of infestation foci and a prioritization scheme for control actions. Foci reduced by more than 90% over 2023–2026.

    Coastal sand-dune reserve control program, based on precise foci mapping and a smallest-and-most-isolated-first prioritization scheme. Phase one launched spring 2026, treating 20 of 72 identified foci using the hack-and-squirt Milestone® (aminopyralid) protocol. Monitoring continues through 2028, with a first report due early 2027.
